Better than a Hallelujah

I heard this song by Amy Grant on Aled Jones' Good Morning Sunday and it seemed to strike a chord:

God loves a lullaby
In a mothers tears in the dead of night
Better than a Hallelujah sometimes.
God loves a drunkards cry,
The soldiers plea not to let him die
Better than a Hallelujah sometimes.

We pour out our miseries
God just hears a melody
Beautiful the mess we are
The honest cries are breaking hard
Are better than a Hallelujah

The woman holding on for life,
The dying man giving up the fight
Are better than a Hallelujah sometimes
The tears of shame for what's been done,
The silence when the words won't come
Are better than a Hallelujah sometimes.

We pour out our miseries
God just hears a melody
Beautiful the mess we are
The honest cries are breaking hard
Are better than a Hallelujah

Better than a church bell ringing,
Better than a choir singing out, singing out.

We pour out our miseries
God just hears a melody
Beautiful the mess we are
The honest cries of breaking hearts
Are better than a Hallelujah

Another plea for authenticity in worship methinks.

  • Love the words - and have listened to the song! Brilliant - all for more REAL worship!

  • Love the words! (have listened to the link, and like that too) all for REAL worship and authentic prayer, rather than "good behaviour in front of the headmaster"!!

  • I agree this is a great song - at the moment authenticity in worship is an issue we are grappling with. 2 weeks time I'm preaching on worship and might well use this song. So thanks so much for sharing it.

  • Hi Jane, thanks for the image of the headmaster... or not! ;-)

Hi Lucy, good to hear from you. Hope all is well for you and that you are not working too hard. Are you at the bappy Theology gathering in Oxford this autumn by any chance? Is so maybe see you there?
