Women in Leadership

Woman headteacher - tick

Woman medical consultant - tick

Woman lawyer - tick

Woman chief executive - tick

Woman minister - cross

Why is it that Christians have no problems with the first four - and even proudly tell you that they are them - but do with the last one?

I suspect we need to get our heads around the nonsense of sacred/secular divides and the mistaken view authority relates only to what happens in the holy huddle on a Sunday.

Thank God for Hopeful Baptist Churches midland and caledonian.

  • I would hope that EVERY minister [woman OR man] would be marked with the Cross!

  • Hi Angela, indeed. Good to see a lighter/profounder moment in amongst my ranting.

  • just got back from a family wedding so only just got to BT - what can I say..inevitable, sad etc. Presumably that means we can also discriminate on the grounds of race as well as it is possible, as we know, to justify is on scriptural grounds - many Christians do o still today. We can also subscribe to slavery as biblically acceptable.

How long O Lord, how long......

  • Why the need to qualify doctor, lawyer ot whatever with the adjective 'woman.' In response to the issues raised in BT and beyond have styarted a four part mini series on women in scripture: kicked off with Deborah and Jael and the wonderful song from Wild Goose 'There is a Line of Women'

  • Good question Craig... because we don't yet undertsand that in 'Christ there is neither male and female' perhaps.

Just don't plan on a camping holiday with Jael, that's my advice!!

  • Sisera was obviously a highly-strung guy, and this may have led to some confusion with the tent pegs...

  • Is it not the same Holy Spirit living within our temples, whether Jew or Gentile, slave or free, male or female. (Galatians 3:26-29). If we allow the men to control and therefore first on earth they will be last in eternity, and eternity is a long time for women to be controlling men, so we best help them out and get equality now, because we love them.

  • Hello Alison.

    Thanks for your thoughts.

My list was generic, not about me - obviously, since I am a Baptist minister. My thought was generic, i.e. that (mostly) people are quite happy for Christian women to have authority/senior roles outside of the church irrespective of their views on women in leadership inside it. I don't believe Baptist ministry is an authority role; it is leadership with/among rather than of/over.

As far as the first/last is concerned I really do not think God is going to give any one group (gender, race, social group) authority over others in eternity... all will be equal under God's authority. Male authority now cannot mean female authority later, that would be inconsistent with God's nature. The relational understanding of the Trinity is surely our best glimpse of what eternity might be like.

  • Hiya Catriona
Just a bit of fun to wind up the guys Catriona.
I concur with all you have said. I will one day be a baptist minister too, according to God's plan not mine. I don't consider it as position of authority but rather a low paid, long hours, hassle a minute, servant job, so I would prefer if he would remove the cup from me, but His will be done in all things.
    Thank you for responding.
    Have a superduper day.
    Kind Regards in Christ
    Alison
